OPEN DF-EDIT -- Version 0.0

Welcome to OPEN DF-EDIT, a set of console bassed programs I intend to help develop and rewrite to port to modern day systems. Hopefully for main use on Unix-Like systems, but also a Windows/DOS port too.

There is no project currently started, but the set of tools will be designed to be a rewrite of the tools written by Larry Kroeker, the exact date when the first version was written is unknown by me, but version 2.3d (wich I have) is from 1986, and was written for PC-DOS

This is Show it is able to browse through files almost like "Midnight Commander", there are a few problems though:

• Opening directories (DIR) requires the user to key the letter "S", this would execute another copy of Show to run on top of it, eventually the system refuses to open anymore copies of itself and will either say that the directory can't be found, or a more serious *** STACK OVERFLOW ***
• The filenames are restriced to DOS style 8.3 filenames, if a file with a larger name is found (eg, example123.txt) it will be shortened in the typic DOS way (exampl~1.txt)
• This program suffers from the Millenium Bug! Anything older than 31-Dec-99 will show as **-***-1** (100 = 2000, 101 = 2001 and so on!), this moves everything else on each line one space to the right!
• As the programs were written for DOS, they don't support the UNIX file permissions (actually, I couldn't even get them to run, I had to use DOSBOX to excecute them at all!)

SF (Show File) is a program that allows one to read files, it can be excecuted from SHOW, or from the SF command, problems with 2.3d:

• You can't go into edit mode from SF, to edit something, you'd have to take note of the line, quit SF, open EDIT and go to the line to edit it!
• If the original file is a long name, it will be saved as an 8.3 file.

EDIT allows you to edit the files that can be opened in SF, a few problems in 2.3d:

• Overtype mode is default, there SHOULD be an option to make Insert mode default

COLORS is the program that configures all the other tools to look the way you want! In an ideal world there should at LEAST be a symbolic link named "COLOURS" for us British folks ;-)
